Weather Protocols

Air Quality

Purpose To serve as a guideline for CMSA Members, Match Officials, Team Officials, and players participating with Calgary Minor Soccer Association. This guide should be used when assessing air quality prior to and during games and/or practices. Procedure Air Quality should be reviewed one (1) hour prior to each game and/or practice start time. Please follow the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) as provided by the Alberta Government: https://airquality.alberta.ca/map/ . This is the only index calculation CMSA will be following.

1. Air Quality is 1 - 5 one hour prior to start time;
a. Game and/or practice may resume as scheduled and all parties should arrive ready to participate.
b. If the AQHI changes to a 7 or above at the start time, the match official for games, and team official for practices should delay or cancel.
i. Match officials have the final say to cancel a game if the conditions are considered dangerous, in the match official’s opinion. Match official is to indicate on the game sheet the reason for abandonment and the AQHI measurement at time of abandonment.
c. If there is a sudden change in AQHI during a game, match officials for games are advised to use their discretion, recording all relevant information on the game sheet. Team officials for practices are advised to use their discretion.

2. Air Quality is 6 or 7 one hour prior to start time;
a. All teams and match officials should arrive ready to participate.
b. If the AQHI is a 6 or below, the game and/or practice may resume as scheduled.
c. If the AQHI remains a 7 or above at the start time, the match official for games and team official for practices should delay or cancel.
i. Match officials have the final say to cancel a game if the conditions are considered dangerous, in the match official’s opinion. Match officials are to indicate on the game sheet the reason for abandonment and the AQHI measurement at time of abandonment.
d. If there is a sudden change in AQHI during a game, match officials for games are advised to use their discretion, recording all relevant information on the game sheet. Team officials for practices are advised to use their discretion.

3. Air Quality is 8 or above one hour prior to start time;
a. The game is considered cancelled, and a rescheduling form should be submitted to CMSA at rhugh@calgaryminorsoccer.com.
b. Practices should be cancelled and rescheduled. If the AQHI is between 4 – 6, allow players to take breaks within games and practices, similar to cooling breaks when extreme temperatures are present. In games, the referee would stop the game for a break during each half for two (2) minutes.

Heat Warnings

AT the field, it is the responsibility of the respective coaches to monitor local temperatures and consult with the Match Official to determine the status of the game. The Match Official reserves the right to cancel a match based on their assessment of the Extreme Heat and Humidex Value.

Heat conditions on artificial turf fields typically register at up-to 5 degrees warmer, so modifications may be required at a lower value than identified in the above chart.
